$19.00

This group of uncleaned coins is comprised of copper pulas of the Golden Horde of Crimean Khanate from the 14th-15th Century. A very unique offering which we have obtained in a very limited supply.

The Mongolian Empire was established by Genghis Kahn in the early 13th century (ca. 1162-1227, one of the greatest and well known leaders of all time. He was the founder and first Great Khan (Emperor) of the Mongol Empire and during his lifetime divided the state between his four sons. The westernmost part of the empire, known as the Golden Horde (or traditionally the Ulus of Jochi, 1242-1502), included vast territories of Eastern Europe and North Central Asia. The Golden Horde thrived in the early part of the 14th century, but began to decline a little over a decade later. In the 15th century, the Crimean Peninsula, which had been its integral part for two centuries, passed into the hands of the Girays dynasty, who established the independent Crimean Khanate (1441–1783).

Coins of the Golden Horde khans circulated in the territory of the subject areas. They feature religious inscriptions, names of khans, tamgas (family seals) and place and year of minting. We can see similarities to the Golden Horde’s coin issues on later coins struck by the rulers of the Crimean Khanate, who considered themselves direct descendants of the Golden Horde.
